Listening to CALIFORNIA SMOKE, a lot of people ask, “Is Redwood County a real place?”

The short answer, is “no”. Just like the characters aren’t real people, Redwood County isn’t a real place. It’s a place I invented in my mind.

But even though I say that, people don’t necessarily believe it.

“Yeah, yeah,” they say. “You can say that all you want, but we know you’re writing about Humboldt County.” Redwood Bay is Eureka and Liberty is Scotia and Manzanita is Garberville and so on.

Well, if that’s what people want to think, okay. I won’t argue. I admit, there could be some similarities—but there are some differences, too ….

To make it more fun for you guys, we put up a map of Redwood County on the website. It helps show the relationships between places. How you get from Eddie’s cabin to Redwood Bay. Where the Divide is. How you get from Manzanita to the Doctor’s house at the Costa Perdida.

There’s also a bunch of terrific illustrations, located in the Episode Details section of each Episode. The idea is to give you a feel for the locations, the rides, and some of the other stuff the characters talk about. The illustrations were all created by super web designer, Yohei Shiraishi, who runs Oceanpeacedesign in Trinidad, California, a beautiful town on the coast in real life Humboldt County, California!

Give it up for Yohei!
